Slovenia

Considered by many as the “greenest” country in the world, Slovenia is a beautiful land with thriving forests covering half of the country. It hosts a culture influenced, but amazingly not dominated by, the Roman, Austrian, and German cultures that ruled the land for most of its existence. Slovenia is now an island of relative peace and prosperity in the midst of what was once Yugoslavia. While the other former Yugoslav countries have been wracked with violence, the young country of Slovenia emerged from Yugoslavia into independence after only a 10-day war; it was the first Yugoslavian country to do so.

Slovenia is also the first Yugoslavian country to bounce back economically. It is the most affluent country of former Yugoslavia. It has transitioned into modern society with a high quality of life and a promising economic outlook. It was able to shake off the stranglehold of inflation, unemployment, and other economic issues that have plagued so many emerging countries in the region through a tenacious pursuit of Western policies and a high priority placed on education. In 2004 Slovenia joined the European Union and continues to impress more western countries with its zeal for progress and change.

The people are very proud of their heritage, in which their religious history plays a large part. It was the protestant reformers of the 1500’s that set down the written form of the Slovene language, and the Bible was one of the first books published. The country remains prominently Roman Catholic, with 70% church membership, though few show real interest or belief. In the early 1990’s, atheism began to spread among the people. Also, spiritual apathy has emerged from the general wealth and stability of the country, preventing people from seeking God. Now, out of 2 million people inhabiting the country, there are a mere 700 born again believers.

However missionaries living in Slovenia have seen much fruit from years of prayer and seed sowing. Several house churches have begun and the new believers are quick to share their faith and win others to Christ.

Though the Slovene people are experiencing everything good about independence and prosperity, Christ is the only one that can bring a lasting fulfillment to their lives. Many are recognizing this deeper, unmet need and are open to hearing the truth of the Gospel.
