Montenegro
The people of Montenegro are culturally (and until recently politically) linked with their neighbors in Serbia. Many Montenegrins are ethnically Serbian, and the countries share many of the same traditions and customs. Montenegrins do differentiate themselves, however, and maintain a fierce pride in their individuality and freedom. Bravery and courage are paramount in the Montenegrin philosophy of life. Together, they make up a sort of unofficial credo of protecting the self from others and protecting others from the self.
Montenegro was unwillingly annexed into Yugoslavia after World War II, however, when the breakup of Yugoslavia occurred in 1989, Montenegro remained the only former Yugoslavian Republic to maintain ties with Serbia. The two countries formed the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1992. Montenegro remains a sovereign republic within the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which was later renamed Serbia and Montenegro. Recently the two separated to become separate sovereign nations.
The fall of the former Yugoslavia dealt Montenegro a harsh blow, causing skyrocketing rates of poverty and hyperinflation. While both the poverty level and inflation have leveled off recently and overall conditions have begun to improve, conditions still need improving. The country has witnessed a large influx of refugees from ethnic conflicts in neighboring countries from the former Yugoslavian Republic. In 1993, it was estimated at 10% of the population of Montenegro were refugees, most of whom were under the age of 14 and over the age of 60.
Montenegro has been know to maintain a policy of tolerance and religious freedom. The country seeks diversity in culture and religion. The three major religions in the country are Eastern Orthodoxy, Catholicism, and Islam, but all religions are given freedom to worship how and when they want. This tolerance has a negative side as well, as religion is highly culturally motivated. Few Montenegrins realize the impact that a personal relationship with Christ can have on their lives. Few have experienced the true freedom found through Him.
Please pray that all the peoples of Montenegro would come to realize that true independence and freedom can only come through a growing and personal relationship with Christ. Pray that churches would be planted and multiply in Montenegro.
If you would like to help spread this freedom found only in Jesus Christ among the peoples of Montenegro or help see churches planted in this country, please contact us at hope4cee@pobox.com.
